Welcome to the
Vernon Shotokan Karate Club. We are not a “business” but rather a
“traditional” non commercial martial arts school. This allows us to better
focus on the traditional karate values of character development, discipline,
respect and dedication as set fourth by Gichin Funikoshi, the founder of
Shotokan Karate. The club has been developing these values in Vernon since
1993 and officially became a member of the International Shotokan Karate
Federation (ISKF) in January 1995.
Vernon club
members are serious about karate training. They have a strong desire to
learn, are helpful and always willing to assist newer members. They are
individuals who come from all walks of life. You will be training along side
high school and college students, professionals, health industry workers,
business owners, technicians and many others. Several of our members have
moved on to become RCMP officers. Our junior members range between the ages
of 7 and 12 years. They are an eager group who train hard together and have
fun at the same time.
Through
dedicated training our members will improve their self image and can develop
a more positive attitude. Individuals with an eye for detail and a stong
desire to improve find traditional karate an interesting and rewarding
activity.
Traditional
karate training is not a sport but a means of developing character through
hard and diligent training. In this dojo (training school) you will learn
the powerful and explosive techniques that Shotokan Karate is recognized
for. More important are the attributes associated with good character.
Dedicated students will be rewarded with increased self confidence, patience
and improved levels of physical fitness, strength and endurance. The best
results are obtained from regular training so students are expected to keep
good attendance.
Your training
will begin with kihon (basics) which involves the techniques of punching,
kicking, blocking and striking. You will also learn kata (formal exercises),
a sequence of complex karate techniques designed as effective defenses
against multiple attackers. A great deal of importance is placed on kata
because this is how karate has been handed down from ancient times. Kumite
(sparring) is another aspect of your training and is practiced regularly.
This is an application of the fundamentals learned in kata. Students of
karate-do will develop courage, fortitude and many other qualities but they
must strive to be humble. In and out of the dojo, club members must exercise
courtesy and respect to others. Other aspects of training include special
seminars, camps and tournaments. Students are encouraged to participate in
all these activities.
